Hey babe! I’m glad you’re here! Welcome back to Boldly Courageous, a podcast created for you — the ambitious woman who is ready to take action and step fully into the life you’ve always dreamed of.
Life comes with heaps of setbacks and letdowns — you lose thousands of dollars, break up with the love of your life, close your business, aren’t selected for that job, lose a parent. Have you ever wondered how many more times you can get knocked down? Have you ever considered whether or not you have what it takes to get up one more time?
Lucky for us, Joanna Vargas, my friend and founder of The Getup Girl Podcast, is joining us to talk about what it looks like to fall down and get up time and time again. Joanna shares her story of losing $250,000 in her business in 2018 and how that lit a fire in her to come back bigger and bolder.
We’re going to dive deep into the importance of getting curious and asking better questions to expand your life and experience everything that’s possible. Let me tell you, Joanna is someone who asks some of the most thought-provoking and incredible questions that will literally change your life. She even shares a few of them right here!
Who Is Joanna Vargas?
Joanna Vargas is a dynamic entrepreneur who has studied dance since the age of five. To this day, she is actively engaged in the entertainment, dance, and fitness business.
Joanna jumped into entrepreneurship as soon as she graduated high school in 1999 and created the JV empire as well as her first professional dance production — a show honoring Michael Jackson called King of Pop. In 2001, she created the Maxt Out HipHop Dance Competition, which is running smoothly to this day and hosts over 3000 dancers and fans every year.
In 2004, Joanna opened a JV dance center. After growing the business to 700 students, Joanna sold it. In 2012, she started The Fit Factor Studio, which unlocked a love for fitness in Joanna. With her event experience and a newfound passion for fitness, Joanna created the Alhambra Pumpkin Run in 2014. The 5k and 10k races attract more than 5,000 people each year.
Needless to say, this woman is a total boss babe. She has created multiple streams of income, numerous businesses, and has succeeded and failed time and time again. Joanna’s latest creation is The Getup Girl podcast. Every week, Joanna pours her wisdom into her listeners through stories, practical tools, and fun, radical candor.
Joanna is on a mission to help others leverage their natural abilities while building their physical and mental strength. Joanna uses a wide range of experience in leadership, business-building, and the fundamentals of fitness and motivation to create kickass life-changing events as well as classes and coaching for her clients all over the world. She is known for pushing her students, teams, and colleagues to their absolute personal best and lovingly providing the training that helps them tap into their personal power.
With that said, the energy Joanna brings to the dance floor and her events is the energy she brings to this episode! It’s absolutely electrifying. Today, Joanna pulls back the curtain on her formula for asking better questions, leveling-up your habits, and getting real with who you are so that you can get back up after every setback and create something bigger and more beautiful than the time before. You’re in for a mega treat!
Become A Get Up Girl by Choosing Yourself
Alignment makes you magnetic. When you get aligned with the energy that’s perfectly congruent with what your soul wants, your success is guaranteed. Sometimes in business, people have this fear of being polarizing. It’s like they’re afraid of being 100% who they are, because they think, “If I create the business around who I am, what I love, and what works for me, standing 100% in my truth and my authenticity, I might offend people, or turn clients away.”
Thinking like this leads people to take action from a place of lack and fear. They end up becoming fence-sitters. It’s like they have one foot on the side of what they love and are good at and the other foot on what they think everyone else wants. Joanna explained that when she chose to close her brick-and-mortar business, the real decision — the bigger decision — she was making was to get in complete alignment with herself.
“For the first two months, I actually felt pretty light during the quarantine. I was enjoying my time out of the studio. I was enjoying my time at home, and it was such a gift for me to have the contrast, to see that I actually like to slow down. I am a fricking hustler, and I’ve been a hustler since high school … searching for, ‘Hey, look at me, here are my accolades.’ And so it’s been years and years and years of doing that in business, after business, after business. To finally slow down, I was actually happy. … So with that being said, it was such a contrast to see, ‘You know what? I’m not happy with what I’m doing in this business.’ And when things reopened, it felt extremely heavy to reopen.”Joanna Vargas
Joanna went on to explain that while reopening the studio felt heavy, closing the studio felt equally heavy. Throughout the quarantine, she had students DM-ing her, telling her how much they loved the studio and were looking forward to her reopening.
But deep down, Joanna felt that the right decision was to close. It wasn’t easy, but it was what felt most in alignment.
That’s an important point — Alignment doesn’t always feel good. Sometimes, whether it’s a personal relationship or business relationship, the right decision doesn’t feel good. Just because the right choice is in alignment doesn’t mean that we get to skip all the emotions that come with letting go of a studio, walking through a divorce, or changing careers.
But it does mean that as we make the hard right decisions, we create space for good things that often do feel good. And that’s exactly what Joanna discovered. As Joanna closed the studio, she realized that it freed up space for her to choose herself.
“I have chosen me for the first time on this planet. For the first time, I’m choosing me. I bought this lie that I was choosing me for so many years. [But] I’ve been choosing for others when I thought I was choosing for me. … So what’s next is I am creating an online community of fitness, but it’s more about life. It’s what I want to teach. It’s things that I want to do. It’s the time slots that I want to do. And if people are in alignment with that invitation, then they’re going to sign up for it. I’m not already going through like, ‘Okay, what time works for everybody? Or what do they want to learn?’ All that kind of stuff that I would filter through before, when I was creating classes and creating courses. Right now, I’m like, ‘Which one is fun? Which one is the path of least resistance? I want to teach this. Okay!’ And it’s throwing it out there and having so much fun. So, I don’t even know what it looks like yet, but whatever feels fun right now, that’s what I’m going with.”Joanna Vargas
Getting off the fence, whether that’s in your business or personal relationships, and going all-in on who you are and what feels right for you allows everyone around you to do the same. When we choose to be 100% authentic, the people around us have to get off the fence. They’re either going to join us, or they’re going to join somebody else. And that’s a beautiful thing because it releases them from sitting on the fence so that they can find the person or the business that fits them. As they get off the fence, you are released into more power to do the things that make you feel most alive.
Become A Get Up Girl by Asking Better Questions
I’ve heard it said that the quality of your life is determined by the quality of questions you ask. Everyone can ask a question. But successful people know how to ask themselves questions that lead them to experience breakthroughs and healing in their life. Joanna has mastered the art of asking questions that set the foundation for astounding comebacks and successful shifts. Today, she shares that her secret sauce isn’t in the questions she asks, but how she looks and listens for answers.
“If there’s one thing that you walk away from a podcast episode [with, it needs to be] getting curious with your life and asking questions. … So when you ask a question, and you’re completely curious, and you do not answer it, that is the secret sauce — not answering the question. Because when you answer the question, you actually limit the possible [answers] that the universe and God and life can give you. When you don’t answer the question, and you’re completely curious, like a young child, then you always get an awareness that is better than you can ever imagine.”Joanna Vargas
Being open to answers that you might never come up with on your own is powerful! Our ego is often the thing that wants to answer, but it’s really that higher power or universe or God or whatever you believe in that has a better answer. Choosing to be curious opens the channel for you to receive whatever their guidance is and be surprised. That’s the feeling of magic happening.
Once you’ve embraced curiosity by trading security for the openness of being surprised, you can start asking questions. Lucky for us, Joanna shared her three-step process for question-asking and which questions to stop asking if you want answers that lead to breakthrough and healing:
First, replace your why questions with how and what questions. Why questions keep you in the moment, like “Why is this happening? Why me?” How and what questions help you look outside of the moment and consider things you might be able to do differently.
The second step is to get curious. Like a child, look at the world with an eagerness to learn and explore, delight in the ordinary, welcome out-of-the-box ideas, and expect to be surprised. Finally, be open to awareness. When we choose to welcome life and possible answers with curiosity it’s amazing how often our body will light up with the right answer, or a friend will call with the perfect solution. Sometimes awareness comes in five minutes and sometimes it comes in five months, but stay ready to receive.
Wanna know the two questions Joanna said you can start asking right now to level-up your life?
- How does it get any better than this?
- What else is possible?
A magnificent life is waiting for you, whether you just got knocked down or you’re stuck in the mundane and can’t remember what laughter sounds like. Stop asking why. Stop coming up with your own answers. And get curious. Ask questions that expand what’s possible for you and wait. Listen. The universe, God, whatever you believe in, is on your side, conspiring for a beautiful breakthrough on your behalf.
