What Comes First, Leadership or Rank, in Network Marketing?

Hey love! I hope you’re having a great day today! Welcome back to Boldly Courageous. I’m so glad you’re here! This post is going to be very informative for all you boss babes out there, but especially for you network marketers!

If you’ve been here for a while, you know that I used to be in network marketing. I’m not anymore — now I run my own regular businesses — but for a long time, I worked in network marketing, and I actually made my first million dollars with my network marketing company.

I am a strong advocate for network marketing — it really is entrepreneurship with training wheels. It gives people the opportunity to have the experience of building a business and managing everything from sales techniques to team-building. I know my experience in network marketing has been extremely valuable to me even as I’ve branched off and started my own businesses — the skills and knowledge I gained during my time as a network marketer are priceless to me, and now I want to share them with you!

So today, I want to talk about one of the most important distinctions I’ve seen in network marketing: Rank vs. Leadership. Which is more important?Which will lead you to the income, abundance, and success you crave? I’m exploring this topic today with the hope that I can inspire you to take charge of your business and develop the systems you need to sustain the abundance you desire. After all, even if you earn a million dollars, you’ll never make it to two or three million if you aren’t prepared to keep earning consistently. Let’s get started!

Why Rank Before Leadership DOESN’T Work…

Let me start by saying this: When it comes to network marketing, you could replace “rank” with “million dollars” and the word “leadership” with “true growth in your business.” When I talk about rank, I’m referring to a specific position in a network marketing company. Generally speaking, the higher your rank, the higher your income. But when I talk about leadership, I’m referring to the actual skills, team-building experience, and mindset necessary to sustain significant growth in a network marketing business.

One of the most significant pain points I’ve seen in network marketing is that sometimes network marketers make it all about their rank. They want to make that million dollars as quickly as possible and ascend to a certain high status within the company.

There are two things that often happen when people get into network marketing, hoping to advance ranks as quickly as possible. One is that they show up and make a quick buck, and then they’re out. Those people don’t have a long-term vision — they just want to make a little bit of money. Once they’ve reached that point, they realize that a million dollars doesn’t mean anything if you can’t continue growing. So they take their money and leave without creating a long-lasting business.

That’s the first scenario, but other times network marketers who choose to focus on rank instead of leadership do stay with the company. They’re given positions of authority as supervisors and managers of teams without any real ability to lead those teams to success. As a result, they often end up pushing their teams too hard. They make the business about the bottom line dollar amount they can earn. They treat their team members like numbers, and they push people to burnout and discouragement. 

I’ve never been one of those people, but I’ve definitely worked for them. I can tell you from experience that it is no fun working under someone who values rank over leadership. I remember I felt a constant push, push, PUSH to increase my output and make more money. I was hustling all the time, but I didn’t feel like I was growing as a businesswoman. I wasn’t developing useful skills — I was just working to meet a quota.

That’s not what network marketing should be about. That’s just working to fuel someone’s ego. If you can sustain working in an environment for long enough to make a significant amount of money, ultimately, you might attain the rank of your supervisor or manager. But you won’t have the skills to be a better leader than they were. You just won’t know how to communicate with your team and build a business that makes an impact.

But there’s good news! It doesn’t have to be that way. You can develop leadership skills, build a strong team, and actually make and receive the financial abundance you desire and deserve. Let’s talk about what it looks like to put leadership first…

And Why Leadership Before Rank DOES Work

What if you placed your value on leadership ahead of rank? What would that look like? Well, first of all, you’d be prioritizing yourself in a much healthier way. Instead of pushing yourself to make the most money you can, you would be focusing on the skills and talents you bring to the table and on the areas where you could improve. You would be using your gifts for the betterment of the team and finding new ways to grow your business at the same time.

For example, maybe you are amazing at sales. You know how to communicate with clients and close the deals, and you’re making a strong impact on your industry and community. That’s great! However, maybe you need to work on your recruiting skills. You need to learn how to better communicate with potential network marketers who could work under you or alongside you to grow your business. When you give yourself the time and space to work on that area where you need improvement, you open yourself and your team up to the possibility of massive growth.

And beyond focusing on yourself, focusing on leadership before rank means your team is your highest priority. Network marketing is all about the connections you can make with other humans, and that includes your team. If you make sure to treat your team members as people rather than as numbers, guess what — they’re going to want to keep working for you. They won’t reach burnout because they’ll actually be having fun, and they continue to work with you, grow the team, and bring in the financial abundance you all seek.

Here’s the thing, babe — consistency wins, always. If you are a consistently good leader, you will succeed. You won’t find yourself in a situation where you have a lot of money and a high rank, but you lack the ability to continue growing. You’ll know how to create and sustain growth over a long period of time. You will manifest your vision for the future a little bit at a time. Eventually, you’ll make your first million dollars, and when you do, you’ll have the systems in place to continue earning at that level and even earn more. You’ll surpass two, three, or more million dollars, and achieve the financial abundance of your wildest dreams.

The best part of all of this is that you’ll actually have the systems in place that will support your increasing wealth — from a business standpoint and a personal standpoint. Your team will have the knowledge, skills, and motivation to continue hustling and finding new ways to bring money into the company. And you will have a mindset and an energy that is ready to receive abundance and manage it in a way that aligns with you and for your personal fulfillment. You will know how to co-create with your money, avoid self-sabotage and impostor syndrome, and show up authentically. Doesn’t that sound incredible?

Babe, I want you to know that when you prioritize leadership over any job title, position in the company, or dollar amount, you open yourself up to so much abundance. You will grow into the strong business leader I know you can be, cultivate a strong team of people who are excited to work for you, and receive abundance you could never have imagined. I know from personal experience that network marketing can be incredibly lucrative and fulfilling at the same time, and it’s possible for you!
