Melissa Martin - Boldly Courageous

The Biggest Lie You’ve Been Sold in Network Marketing

Hello beautiful! Welcome back to the Boldly Courageous podcast! I’m so grateful you’re here, and I’m excited to be bringing you network marketers a very important message today. You might love this episode, and you might hate it, but regardless, I think it’s something all network marketers need to hear, and I believe it will help you grow your own career and avoid making some serious mistakes in your business.

I’ve got good news and bad news for you today. The bad news is that you do not own your network marketing business. If you work for a network marketing company, you are essentially a contractor for hire. You have signed a contract to work for a company that someone else owns and controls.

But here’s the good news: That doesn’t mean network marketing is a bad career! You can learn so much from a network marketing experience, including leadership skills, time management, team building, and so much more. And most importantly of all, it’s an opportunity for you to create your personal brand and set yourself up for success.

And that’s important because when you work for another company, anything can happen. That company can restructure, and you can lose all your income overnight. That happened to me, and I literally lost all my income within two months. I was able to pivot because I’d build a personal brand, but some of my coworkers didn’t have the same ability. I don’t want that to happen to you! So today, I’m bringing you a message that I hope will help you and empower you to get the most out of your network marketing experience and still be ready to pivot if you need to. Let’s dive in!

The Bad News: You Don’t Own Your Business

Before we get into some of the positive aspects of network marketing, I do want to make sure I drive this point home: If you are a network marketer, you do not own your own business. You don’t own the company — you work for the company and manage a team within the company.

Here’s why that’s important: When you don’t own the company, there are a lot of things you can’t control. You can’t control manufacturing. You can’t control the quality of the actual product. You don’t have any say about how you get paid. You don’t own your compensation plan. You have no say over how products are marketed or what new products come to market. You don’t get to make decisions from a corporate perspective, and you don’t even own your customers — the company owns them.

The problem with this is that the company truly can make decisions that dramatically affect your income without giving you any say. They can choose to restructure their business model, and if you’re not prepared with multiple streams of income, you can end up bankrupt overnight.

It’s true — Your relationship with the company can change that quickly. That’s why you must read the fine print of your contract before you sign it! You can be terminated at any time, for any reason. You can even be terminated for things that go on in your household. If you or somebody else in your household does something that the company deems inappropriate, you can lose your position.

Bottom line: You might be ready to bleed for your company, but your company will not bleed for you. At the end of the day, this is a business, and you have a job. You are replaceable, and your network marketing company will not hesitate to find someone new to fill your position — no matter how big your team is — if they decide it’s necessary.

But before you get too discouraged, network marketing is still an incredible opportunity! I still believe that it’s a wonderful business model, and I think that having a career in network marketing is an excellent way to develop leadership and business skills. I just want to make sure you’re aware of the risks and truths about network marketing, but let’s shift back into empowering you, shall we?

The Good News: Network Marketing Is Entrepreneurship with Training Wheels

That was a lot of bad news, but let’s talk about the positive sides of network marketing. There are plenty of amazing things about network marketing, and I genuinely believe that it’s a wonderful way for anyone to get into the business world. Whether you want to quit your desk job and work for a company you care deeply about, or you think you might want to be an entrepreneur and start your own company one day, network marketing can be an incredible opportunity for you.

First of all, network marketing teaches you invaluable leadership skills. I did a whole episode recently on the importance of learning leadership skills through network marketing, but I want to reiterate — If you want to learn how to lead a team to success in business, network marketing is a fantastic way to do that without putting a ton of your own money on the line.

Secondly, network marketing is an incredible platform you can use to create and build your personal brand. I’ll talk more about the specifics of creating your brand in a minute, but for now, I want to emphasize this point: While you don’t own your network marketing business, you do own your personal brand. Your online presence and the personality, language, and message are yours — not the company’s. You fully own your voice and authenticity, and those are priceless assets for any entrepreneur.

When I was in network marketing and my company restructured, I lost all of my income almost overnight. I went from being a million-dollar businesswoman to having nothing faster than I thought possible. But there was one silver lining: I still owned my personal brand. I had invested a lot of time and effort into creating my brand voice and message of abundance, and I still owned those things when I lost my position at my company.

What did that mean for me? It meant I was able to pivot and start rebuilding much faster than my colleagues who hadn’t carefully crafted their brand voices. I had to start over, building from the ground up, but I was able to use my personal brand to continue developing relationships with people and ultimately start my own business that I did fully control.

Do you have a personal brand? Do you have a strong message that you want to share with your clients or customers? Do you have a specific language you use to communicate with them? Let’s talk about some of the specifics of creating a personal brand…

Building Your Authentic Brand

Here’s more good news: Your brand and your authenticity are the things that are going to elevate you and make you truly successful in network marketing or entrepreneurship. Your voice makes you unique, and it’s what you’re going to use to create relationships with your clients and customers. When people trust your voice, they’re going to keep coming back for more! And since you have full control over every aspect of your personal brand, you have the power to build it and craft it to best serve the audience you love.

The first question to ask yourself when you’re building your brand is this: What are you the expert at? What do you have specific knowledge or wisdom about that other people could benefit from? Are you the expert in helping new moms bounce back after having babies? Are you the best at helping millennials to become more confident? Think about your unique skills, knowledge, and passion, and start working your message about those things into every aspect of your branding.

Once you’re super clear on your own expertise, it’s time to understand who your audience is. Remember: When you are talking to everybody, you are talking to no one. You can’t possibly expect to serve every single person. For example, I know that my expertise, passion, and unique voice are not meant to serve 65-year-old men who work in tech. They’re not my niche, and that’s not the community I’m meant to serve. I serve women in network marketing who have a sense of humor and are striving to be boss babes, so my branding is catered to that community.

Who are you serving? How do you need to address those people? Think about the language you use. For example, I like to use words like “babe” or “sister,” but what words should you use to address your audience? Also, remember to consider what words are true to your authentic voice. If you use a lot of humor and swear a lot, include that in your branding! If you have a few keywords that are central to your voice and message, repeat them all over your website and social media. Make sure that your online presence is open and honest about who you are, what you do, and the people you serve, and the clients, wealth, and abundance will start rolling in.

Build Your Boldly Courageous Brand

Babe, I want to give you an invitation today. I’m inviting you to take full ownership of your brand, your voice, and your authenticity. Whether you work within a network marketing company or you’re building your own business, you have total control over your voice — You have the power to use it to serve your audience.

So if you haven’t yet, start investing in your personal brand. Craft your presence online and in your interactions with clients to reflect your unique message. Make sure your ideal audience knows who you are and how your unique knowledge can benefit them. When you approach business with authenticity and an attitude of abundance, you will find that clients and money both flow straight to you. You will live the abundant life of your dreams!

And if you’re in network marketing, having a strong personal brand will give you so much more control over your business life. If the worst happens and your company restructures in a way that hurts you, you’ll be able to pivot and build a new business just like I did!
